Cambridge in America (CAm) invites you to an evening of inspiration and insight featuring a conversation between two esteemed thought leaders, Harvard Professor and CAm Board member Henry Louis Gates Jr. (Clare 1973) and Lord Simon Woolley, Principal of Homerton College and Deputy Vice Chancellor of Cambridge University, moderated by Harvard Professor Peter Galison (Churchill 1977).

This event will be a stimulating exploration of history, identity, and the role of education in affecting societal change.

Henry Louis Gates Jr.

Henry Louis Gates Jr. (Clare 1973) is an American literary scholar and Emmy award winning documentary filmmaker who serves as the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and the director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University. Professor Gates is the recipient of numerous awards and honorary degrees, including from the University of Cambridge. Most recently, he received a 2024 Primetime Emmy nomination for "Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.," a documentary television series that uses genealogical research and genetics to discover the family history of well-known Americans, and he is the 2024 recipient of the Spingarn Medal from the NAACP for his contributions to the literary world and commitment to Black history. Read the full bio.

Lord Simon Woolley

Lord Simon Woolley is the founder and director of Operation Black Vote (OBV) and Trustee of the charity Police Now, Principal of Homerton College and Deputy Vice Chancellor of Cambridge University. Repeatedly recognized in the Black Powerlist, Lord Woolley is dedicated to promoting opportunity for underrepresented communities and individuals, and to building consensus across political and community lines. Peter Galison

Peter Galison (Churchill 1977) is the Joseph Pellegrino University Professor at Harvard University. He currently directs the Black Hole Initiative at Harvard, a leading center for interdisciplinary research on black holes. His books include How Experiments End; Image and Logic: A Material Culture of Microphysics; Einstein’s Clocks, Poincaré’s Maps; and, with Lorraine Daston, Objectivity.
