Topic Summaries

  • The Geopolitics of the Energy Transition (by Simon Taylor)

The transition from a fossil fuel based economy to a low carbon one will change the role of key suppliers and users of energy. We will look at who wins and loses, the  big differences from the oil based economy, and the potential for a world of cheaper and more secure local energy sources.

  • The Key Global Economic Relationship: the USA and China (by Simon Taylor)

We will look at the history of US-China relations, and whey they have gone from benign, to competitive to tense and even hostile. We'll explore how far the two can decouple and what it means for the world economy. We'll invite the class to consider the two different points of view: that of the US, and of China, and see if we can come up with any ways to improve relations or at least reduce the risk of all out conflict.

  • Value vs. Virtue: Framing the ESG Debate Rationally (by Pedro Saffi)

Adopting ESG policies is a highly controversial topic. Do they create value, or are they simply posturing? Prof Saffi will discuss the trade-offs behind adopting ESG policies and the need to be honest with stakeholders about their costs and objectives.

  • The search for alpha: how to identify good investment managers (by Pedro Saffi)

Prof Saffi will discuss how to find skilled investment managers, if they even exist, and the debate between active versus passive asset management.
